ISA Exam Glossary: Core Terms You Must Know
A cheat sheet of the most critical vocabulary for the ISA Certified Arborist exam, from Biology to Risk Management.
Passing the ISA Certified Arborist exam requires more than just reading the study guide—it requires a structured, strategic approach. Whether you have three months or just a few weeks, having a clear roadmap is the difference between panic and confidence on exam day.
This guide provides a detailed 12-week ISA study plan, along with compressed 8-week and 4-week variations for those on a tighter schedule.
Who Is This Plan For?
- 12-Week Plan: Ideal for most working arborists. Allows for 5-8 hours of study per week without burnout.
- 8-Week Plan: Best for those with some prior knowledge or more free time (10-12 hours/week).
- 4-Week Plan: An intense "cram" schedule for experienced arborists or those with 15+ hours/week to dedicate.
Phase 1: Foundation Building (Weeks 1–4)
The goal of the first month is to cover the core science domains. These are the heaviest topics and form the basis for everything else.
Weeks 1–2: The Science of Trees
- Focus Domains: Soil Management, Tree Biology & Physiology, Water Relations.
- Action Items:
- Read chapters on Soil and Biology twice.
- Create flashcards for key terms (e.g., cation exchange capacity, photosynthesis, transpiration).
- Practice: Take 20-question quizzes on these specific domains. Aim for >70%.
Weeks 3–4: Identification & Selection
- Focus Domains: Tree Identification, Selection, Installation & Establishment.
- Action Items:
- Walk your neighborhood or a local park with a field guide. Identify 5 new trees each week.
- Review ANSI A300 (Part 6) standards for planting.
- Practice: Focus on "right tree, right place" scenarios.
Phase 2: Management & Practice (Weeks 5–8)
Now that you understand how trees grow, you'll focus on how to manage, prune, and protect them.
Weeks 5–6: Pruning & Support
- Focus Domains: Pruning, Tree Support & Lightning Protection.
- Action Items:
- Master the difference between thinning, reduction, and cleaning.
- Draw diagrams of cabling systems (direct, triangular, box).
- Practice: Watch videos on proper pruning cuts (branch collar identification).
Weeks 7–8: Diagnosis & Plant Health Care
- Focus Domains: Diagnosis & Treatment, Plant Health Care (PHC).
- Action Items:
- Learn the "Appropriate Response Process" (ARP).
- Distinguish between biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) disorders.
- Practice: extensive quizzes on pest identification and disease signs/symptoms.
Phase 3: Safety & Integration (Weeks 9–11)
Safety is a huge part of the exam. Do not skip this.
Weeks 9–10: Safety & Risk
- Focus Domains: Safe Work Practices (ANSI Z133), Tree Risk Assessment.
- Action Items:
- Memorize "MAD" (Minimum Approach Distances) for electrical hazards.
- Review chainsaw safety and climbing protocols.
- Understand the 3 components of risk (Target, Likelihood of Failure, Likelihood of Impact).
Week 11: Full Mock Exams
- Focus: Simulating test day.
- Action Items:
- Take at least two full-length (200-question) mock exams.
- Simulate real conditions: no phone, timed (3.5 hours), no breaks.
- Review: Analyze every wrong answer. Why did you miss it?
Phase 4: Taper & Logistics (Week 12)
Do not cram this week. Your brain needs to be fresh.
- Days 1–4: Light review of your weakest areas (error log).
- Day 5: Logistics check. confirm location, ID, and route.
- Day 6: Rest. No studying.
- Day 7: Exam Day.
Compressed Schedules
The 8-Week "Accelerator"
- Weeks 1–2: Biology, Soil, Water (Heavy reading).
- Weeks 3–4: ID, Selection, Pruning.
- Weeks 5–6: PHC, Diagnosis, Support Systems.
- Week 7: Safety, Risk, Urban Forestry.
- Week 8: Mock Exams & Review.
- Requirement: You need to study 1.5 hours every weeknight and 3-4 hours on weekends.
The 4-Week "Crash Course"
Warning: minimal retention time. High risk of burnout.
- Week 1: Botany bootcamp (Biology, Soils, ID). 2 hours/day.
- Week 2: Maintenance (Pruning, PHC, Health). 2 hours/day.
- Week 3: Safety & Risk (Z133 is critical). 2 hours/day.
- Week 4: Practice Tests & Error Correction. 3 hours/day.
Study Tips fro Success
- Active Recall: Don't just re-read. Close the book and try to explain the concept out loud.
- Spaced Repetition: Use flashcards for definitions and scientific names. Review them at increasing intervals (1 day, 3 days, 1 week).
- The "Error Log": Keep a notebook of every question you get wrong on practice tests. Write down why you got it wrong.
