ISA Exam Day Checklist: What to Bring and How to Prepare

"What to bring to Pearson VUE on ISA exam day, how to manage time across 200 questions, and test-day mental strategies from BCMA Chris Comer."

You've studied for months. Don't let a missing ID or a dead calculator battery ruin the big day. The ISA exam (especially at Pearson VUE centers) has strict security protocols.

Here is your checklist to ensure the only thing you have to worry about is the questions.

What to Bring

  • Two Forms of ID: This is non-negotiable.
    • Primary: Valid government-issued photo ID with signature (Driver's License, Passport).
    • Secondary: ID with name and signature (Credit card, Student ID).
    • Note: Ensure the name on your ID matches your application exactly.
  • The Authorization Letter: Print it out or have it ready on your phone (though you can't take your phone in).
  • Calculator:
    • Allowed: Simple, non-programmable, battery-operated.
    • Prohibited: Graphing calculators, phone calculators.
  • Layers: Testing centers are notoriously freezing cold. Bring a light sweater or jacket.

What to Leave in the Car (or Locker)

  • Phone/Smartwatch: Absolutely forbidden in the testing room.
  • Study Materials: No notes, books, or cheat sheets.
  • Food/Water: usually not allowed at the desk (check specific center rules).

The Night Before

  1. Stop Studying: You cannot cram 10 domains in 2 hours. Your brain needs rest to function.
  2. Locate the Center: Check traffic. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early.
  3. Pack Your Bag: Put your ID and calculator in it now.

During the Exam (3.5 Hours)

  • The "Brain Dump": As soon as the timer starts, use your scratch paper to write down formulas or lists you are afraid of forgetting (e.g., soil particle sizes, crane hand signals).
  • The "Two-Pass" Method:
    1. Go through all 200 questions. Answer the easy ones. Flag the ones that take thought.
    2. Go back and do the flagged questions.
  • Don't Leave Blanks: There is no penalty for guessing. If you run out of time, pick "C" for every remaining question.

Post-Exam

  • Pearson VUE: You usually get a printout of your results immediately.
  • Paper Exam: You wait 4-6 weeks (sorry).

Summary

Control the logistics so you can focus on the content. Good luck!
